Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. is a leading travel and financial services provider headquartered in Mumbai, India. Since opening its first office in 1881, the company has grown to 233 locations across 94 cities in India, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius, including 23 airport counters. The company provides foreign exchange, holiday packages, visa and passport support, travel insurance, and MICE services.

History of TCIL

For over a century, Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. has been at the forefront of travel innovation.

The company pioneered the world’s first package tour in 1841, introduced the pre-paid hotel coupon in 1868, published the first holiday brochure in 1858, and developed the first Traveller’s Cheques in 1874.

The company went public in February 1983, marking a key milestone in its journey. It entered the Mauritian market in 2000 and, in the same year, acquired the Sri Lanka business from Thomas Cook Overseas Ltd, UK.

In 2006, Thomas Cook India Limited acquired LKP Forex Limited and Travel Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd. (TCI). A major shift came in May 2012 when Fairbridge Capital (Mauritius) Limited took ownership of the Indian arm of Thomas Cook Group, making it part of the Fairfax Group in Canada.

Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. expanded its portfolio in 2013 with the purchase of Quess Corp (formerly Ikya Group), which specialises in HR, IT services, facilities management, food services, and skill development. That same year, it also acquired Sterling Holiday Resorts.

In 2015, Thomas Cook Lanka Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Thomas Cook India Limited, strengthened its position in Sri Lanka by acquiring Luxe Asia Pvt. Ltd., a destination management company catering to inbound tourists from global markets. That year, TCIL also expanded into new markets with the acquisition of Kuoni Travel (India) Private Limited and Kuoni Travel (China) Limited.

In September 2017, Thomas Cook acquired Tata Capital’s foreign exchange and travel business, further strengthening its market presence.
