BLOOD GIVING DAY AT THOMAS COOK MAURITIUS

Posted on: 29th Oct 2009

We are sure you have all heard the expression “do something amazing, give blood”. Well on the 22nd of October 2009 Thomas Cook Mauritius did exactly that! We decided to make a difference and set up our blood donation day in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Quality of life.

It was an early cheerful start at Thomas Cook, staff grouped together helping put up banners outside, dressed in red tee-shirts, all set and ready for an enjoyable day.

Every minute of every day, someone needs blood. That blood can only come from a volunteer, so unfortunately there is no substitute for a donation. Therefore this blood donation day was taken very seriously. Enthusiasm and commitment was the scene at Thomas Cook throughout the day. With its entire staff united together to not only give their own blood but also promote and encourage others to do so. Luckily, the weather was on our side and also played its part in helping the day.

There were many staffs who willingly gave blood and a few who needed persuading! Outside of Thomas Cook, it was a similar story with many members of the public ready to give blood, and many who needed a push in the right direction. So, all in all, it was a successful day as a wider awareness was created about the importance of voluntary blood donation with an outcome of 60% above last year’s volume and 44% above expectation. The blood collected was bequeathed to the National Blood Bank.

Why was there a sense of PRIDE at the end of the day? The simplest answer is blood saves lives, and in educating people about blood donation, motivating and recruiting them, it can be said that this blood donation day has helped save many lives in the future.
